Kelowna — a century ago

There are cities that remember their builders in bronze and brick.

And then there are the builders a city was never meant to notice.

More than a century ago, this town on the lake learned to do something new. It learned to connect. A light. A voice on a wire. A signal in the open air. The people who made it happen did their work — and disappeared into it.

And somewhere in the middle of it all, a message was sent across Kelowna that never arrived.

At least, that is the story the city still tells — documented, disputed, and retold so often that no one can quite say where history ends and legend begins.

We aren't going to tell you what it is. That's the point.

Somewhere along the waterfront, through the old downtown, and in the buildings that have worn more than one name, the pieces are waiting. You will not be handed a map. You will be handed clues — one sealed envelope at a time.

And remember: in Kelowna, not everything you are told is history.

Kelowna, British Columbia

One afternoon. One lakefront city. One story it never finished telling.

What is this

Mixed teams. Six checkpoints. One waterfront downtown — and a century-old mystery you can only crack in person.

The Pursuit is a walking race through Kelowna's waterfront and heritage core, carried on sealed envelopes. History, cunning and charm get you further than speed. Every stop hides a challenge, and every clue changes what you think the story is about.

The Trail

Six sealed envelopes, opened one at a time, winding from the Delta Grand along the water and through the old downtown. Solve one, take your photo, break the next seal.

The Trade-Up

Optional — switch it on if your group wants it. Each team starts with a single keychain and trades it up, charm only and no money, stop by stop into something worth bragging about. Best item and best story win.

The Tribunal

When the race ends, everyone reconvenes back at the Delta Grand for the reveal — where the clues finally line up, and every team renders its verdict.

How the mystery works

Six sealed envelopes. Open only one at a time.

You will not be handed a map. Each envelope tells you a little more of the story — and points, obliquely, at where to go next. Solve it, take your photo, and only then break the next seal. We are not going to tell you what's inside. That's the point.

Sealed orders

Six envelopes, opened one at a time. Each one cracks the story a little wider — and gives away nothing you haven't earned.

✦

Hidden in plain sight

The answers aren't in a guidebook. They're on the waterfront, in the old downtown, and in the buildings that have worn more than one name.

✦

You be the judge

By the last envelope the facts won't all line up. Your team decides what can actually be known — and defends it at the Tribunal.

The rules are simple

History, cunning, and charm will get you further than speed.

The event

The conference ends. The story doesn't.

The sessions wrap and the badges come off. The race runs two to three hours on a flat loop through downtown — then everyone reconvenes at the Delta Grand for the Tribunal, with the rest of the day still ahead of you.

A note on the weather: October in the Okanagan can turn. The Pursuit runs rain or shine — and if the weather turns, the whole mystery moves indoors to the Delta Grand ballroom. Same story, same finish. Downtown has full coverage, so one phone per team doubles as your camera and your answer sheet.

By the end of the day

The city catches the light. The stories last longer.

There is no prize for spoiling the mystery.

There is, however, considerable satisfaction in being the team that solves it.
